UP: Samajwadi Party raises questions about voter list revision, demands merger of special campaign with SSR

Lucknow, Oct 17 (UNI) The Samajwadi Party raised several important objections and suggestions at a meeting held by the Chief Electoral Officer today with political parties regarding the special summary revision of the voter list in Uttar Pradesh.
The party questioned the rationale behind the special campaign for voter list revision and demanded that it be merged with the Special Summary Revision (SSR) and run as a single campaign.
The Samajwadi Party stated that a special intensive voter list revision campaign was previously conducted for approximately 166 days, or five and a half months, at 1,77,516 booths across all 403 assembly constituencies in the state.
According to a statement issued by the party today, shortly after the completion of this process, a special campaign for voter list revision has been launched for a month, starting October 5. Meanwhile, a special summary revision programme has also been announced for one month, starting November 12.
The Samajwadi Party stated at the meeting that during the special summary revision of the electoral roll, voters and those wishing to become new voters had to follow complex and onerous rules.
The party questioned the need for separate campaigns if the rules adopted in the SIR process are no longer in effect and demanded that a new special campaign be launched.
The party stated that instead of two separate campaigns for the electoral roll, the current special campaign should be merged into the special summary revision.
The SP demanded that only one coordinated SSR campaign be conducted for the voter list revision, to avoid unnecessary confusion for voters and political parties.
At the meeting, the SP also made several demands to increase the participation and transparency of political parties in the voter list process. The party demanded that a list of names and mobile numbers of booth level officers, each by constituency, be made available to the respective booth level agents or political parties.
Furthermore, the party stated that information regarding Forms 6, 7, and 8 received by the Electoral Registration Officer should be displayed on the notice board daily and made available for at least a week.
The Samajwadi Party also demanded that a list of voters identified by BLOs and prepared based on the received forms be made available to political parties every week.
The Samajwadi Party alleged at the meeting that such special voter list campaigns were aimed at benefiting the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party rather than ensuring a fair process. The party stressed greater transparency in the electoral process and the need to provide regular information to political parties.
K.K. Srivastava, Dr. Harishchandra Singh, and Radheshyam Singh presented the party's position at the meeting with the Chief Electoral Officer.
