Uttarakhand legislature scripts unseemly history, opposition boycotts group photo session

Prithviraj Singh
Dehradun, Oct 28 (UNI) An unseemly history was scripted in the Uttarakhand legislature's traditional norms at Bhararisain on Wednesday as the opposition boycotted the customary group photo session on the last day of the assembly session.
Congress MLAs alleged that they were not keen to stand along with what they termed as a "corrupt government".
As per tradition, Speaker Ritu Khanduri had formally invited all MLAs including opposition legislators for the traditional photograph session organised outside the assembly building before the start of the house proceedings at 11 am.
However, the Congress Legislative Party (CLP) decided not to take part in the group photograph alongside ruling party legislators.
Congress MLAs stated that they boycotted the group photograph so as "not to be seen with the corrupt government".
As the ruling party MLAs led by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami went ahead with their plan for the group photograph, Congress legislators took to the stairs shouting slogans against the government while holding placards and leaflets in their hands.
Leader of the Opposition in the house Yashpal Arya stated, "It was decided by the CLP not to sit with ruling party MLAs for the photograph as the government is neck deep involved in corruption and the law and order situation is in shambles."
Later, as the House began proceedings at 11 am, BJP MLA Arvind Pandey stood up and raised the matter saying never in the history of Uttarakhand Assembly has this tradition been broken, but the opposition has failed the convention of the state legislature.
Reacting to Pandey's statement in the House, opposition MLAs shouted, "Why should we come with this corrupt government."
On this, BJP MLA Dilip Rawat said, "This was a traditional norm of the state assembly but the Congress party has destroyed it."
Speaker Ritu Khanduri too criticised the Congress MLAs for their action. "Traditional norms must be followed. It was my call for the traditional group photograph but you did not accept. However, it's okay. That's your party's decision," said the Speaker.
It's notable that a group photograph of the legislators on the last day of the session of the state assembly has been a tradition in the state.
But for the first time in the history of Uttarakhand, the oppostion legislators boycotted the conventional photo session.
