Venugopal accuses Delhi Police of blocking INDIA Bloc’s campaign against CEC, warns of escalated protests

New Delhi, Oct 27 (UNI) Congress general secretary K C Venugopal, on Tuesday, accused the Delhi Police of obstructing the INDIA bloc’s proposed public campaign seeking the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, alleging that the authorities denied permission for a planned venue and subsequently prevented preparations at Ramlila Maidan despite the organisers having secured the requisite clearances.
“How many permissions will you deny, Mr. Amit Shah? How many people will you stop?” Venugopal asked union Home Minister Amit Shah in a post on the social media platform X, accusing the government of attempting to suppress the Opposition’s campaign over electoral issues.
Venugopal said 21 parties of the opposition INDIA bloc had planned a “public impeachment” programme against Kumar as a curtain-raiser to the bloc’s mega rally and march scheduled for November 1.
According to him, the organisers initially sought permission to hold the programme at Hotel Ashoka, but their request was denied. They subsequently shifted the venue to Ramlila Maidan, where, he alleged, the Delhi Police stopped preparations despite the organisers having obtained the necessary permissions.
“First they destroy the electoral system, and now they are trying all kinds of tricks to silence those who fight to save our democracy,” Venugopal said, accusing the government of using administrative restrictions to curb the Opposition’s campaign for electoral reforms and accountability.
The Congress leader made it clear that the INDIA bloc would not retreat from its demand for Kumar’s removal. Describing the Chief Election Commissioner as a “Modi-Shah’s puppet”, Venugopal said the Opposition would continue its agitation until its objective was achieved. The remark was a political allegation by the Congress leader and not an established finding.
Warning of an escalation if the authorities continued to prevent the Opposition from holding its programme at the designated venues, Venugopal said the protesters could take their agitation to the residences of the Prime Minister and the Home Minister. “If they stop us here, we will go to Amit Shah’s house, PM Modi’s house, and stage a massive dharna there,” he said.
The confrontation comes amid the INDIA bloc’s continuing campaign over electoral reforms and allegations of irregularities in the revision of electoral rolls. Opposition parties have repeatedly questioned the functioning of the Election Commission and demanded greater transparency and accountability in the preparation and revision of voter lists. The November 1 rally and march are intended to broaden the campaign and intensify pressure on the government and the poll panel.
The proposed “public impeachment” of Kumar is a political campaign seeking his removal, rather than a formal constitutional impeachment proceeding. The removal of the Chief Election Commissioner is governed by a specific constitutional procedure. Venugopal’s allegations concerning the denial of permission and the police action at Ramlila Maidan were not accompanied by an official response from the Delhi Police in the post cited by him.
