Vijayendra cracks whip on Gubbi BJP factions

Bengaluru, Oct 4 (UNI) Karnataka BJP president Vijayendra Yediyurappa on Sunday threatened to enter the electoral fray himself from Gubbi if the bitter factional fight within the party's local unit was not brought to an end, delivering a sharp warning to leaders that their infighting could cost the BJP the constituency.
Vijayendra's warning came after a public spat between rival groups during a BJP booth-level campaign at Chelur in Gubbi taluk, forcing him to intervene and pacify the warring supporters.
The confrontation reportedly involved supporters of former BJP candidate S.D. Dileep Kumar and another ticket aspirant, KS Chandrashekhar Babu. The immediate trigger was Babu's failure to mention Dileep Kumar's name during his address, following which Dileep's supporters objected and demanded that their leader be acknowledged.
The argument escalated, with Babu reportedly leaving the stage amid the altercation before Vijayendra stepped in to calm the situation.
Clearly angered by the episode, Vijayendra told the rival factions that years of hard work to build the BJP in Gubbi could not be allowed to be destroyed by internal squabbling. "How can the BJP ever win Gubbi if you keep fighting among yourselves? If the two of you keep fighting, the third person will benefit," he said.
In a pointed rebuke, Vijayendra questioned the claims of individual leaders that they had built the BJP in the constituency. "Some people are under the illusion that the BJP has grown in the constituency because of them. We have all worked hard and built the party over years. Will you destroy it in a minute? Will you argue in front of the media?" he asked.
He then issued his strongest warning: "If this does not end happily, I myself will come to Gubbi and contest."
The remark immediately gives the Gubbi contest a new political dimension, particularly with Dileep Kumar, who contested the last Assembly election, and Chandrashekhar Babu being among those seen as ticket aspirants.
Vijayendra, however, urged party workers to put the episode behind them and concentrate on the larger electoral battle. "Whatever has happened has happened. Don't worry about it. Let anyone say whatever they want," he said.
Projecting confidence about the BJP's prospects in the 2028 Assembly elections, Vijayendra said the party would return to power in Karnataka with at least 130 MLAs. "Whatever the Chief Minister may say or however much he may make noise, when the 2028 Assembly elections are held, the BJP will come to power with at least 130 MLAs. Nobody can stop that," he said.
But he stressed that Gubbi would have to be part of that victory. "When those 130-140 MLAs win, Gubbi too must win. That is the aspiration with which I have come here," Vijayendra said.
He asked the party's local leaders to stop trading charges and instead work to strengthen the organisation and resolve issues on the ground. "Let us do the work that needs to be done and get things corrected. Everyone must understand this," he said.
Vijayendra's intervention exposes the seriousness of the factional tensions within the Gubbi BJP and his threat to contest from the seat could potentially upset the calculations of multiple local ticket aspirants ahead of the 2028 Assembly elections.
