Viral bike-skid video on social media raises questions over Kolkata's painted roads

Kolkata, Oct 14 (UNI) A video purportedly showing three motorcycles skidding one after another on a coloured road surface of a flyover has triggered concerns among a section of motorists in Kolkata, with questions being raised over the safety of the city's pre-Durga Puja road beautification drive.
On Wednesday, Sayandip Lahiri posted a video on Meta showing three bikes reportedly skidding and falling one after another on the coloured surface of a flyover. The footage appeared to have been recorded from the dashboard camera of a vehicle.
The authenticity of the video could not be independently verified.
The footage has nevertheless fuelled allegations from some motorcyclists that the newly painted road surfaces become slippery when wet. Some riders have also complained that the bright colours used on roads can be dazzling in direct sunlight.
Urban Development and Municipal Affairs Minister Agnimitra Paul, whose department has been overseeing the road beautification initiative, said the police and administration were looking into the matter.
“One bike fell down and hit another bike in front of it. We do not know why it fell. The police and administration have been informed about the matter,” Paul said.
She maintained that the paints being used on the roads were “anti-skid” and said there was no reason for vehicles to fall because of the paint.
“However, I have heard that the colours are dazzling for many people. We are looking into that. If people are facing difficulties, an alternative arrangement will also be made,” Paul said.
Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, when asked about the reported incident, questioned whether there was evidence linking road painting to accidents.
“Do accidents happen because of painting? On how many flyovers have accidents occurred?” he said.
Adhikari pointed out that several flyovers had been painted as part of the beautification drive and said he would not make any further comment without having complete information about the incident.
Paul said the road-painting initiative and the wider beautification programme had received a positive response from people ahead of Durga Puja.
The BJP government's first Durga Puja in West Bengal has seen roads, bridges and flyovers across Kolkata given a colourful makeover, with painted surfaces replacing the conventional black asphalt appearance at several locations. UNI SEN CDS
