Visakhapatnam Collector Orders Round-the-Clock Surveillance at Strong Rooms

Visakhapatnam, Oct 21 (UNI) District Collector Abhisikth Kishore on Wednesday directed officials to ensure foolproof security at strong rooms storing polled ballot boxes in urban and rural areas, with round-the-clock CCTV surveillance and strict adherence to State Election Commission guidelines until the completion of vote counting.
The Collector instructed officials to transport ballot boxes, along with the Presiding Officer’s diary and ballot paper account, in designated vehicles under police security to the respective reception centres, following the prescribed routes.
Candidates and their polling agents must be allowed to follow the vehicles carrying the ballot boxes, which must be deposited in the strong rooms in the presence of candidates or their authorised representatives, he said.
He directed officials to implement a double-lock system and establish a two-tier security arrangement at all strong rooms. CCTV cameras must operate round the clock inside the rooms, at their entrances and in the surrounding areas.
The Collector also ordered the establishment of control rooms within 100 metres of each strong room, with screens enabling candidates and representatives of political parties to view CCTV footage.
Strong rooms must be opened on the counting day only in the presence of candidates’ representatives, he said.
Returning Officers and Election Officers were directed to inspect the strong room premises and security arrangements and verify the relevant logbooks and video recordings.
The Collector emphasised that all Election Commission guidelines must be implemented meticulously and that continuous security and surveillance must be maintained over the polled ballot boxes until the counting process is completed.
