Water level reaches 136 feet, shutters of Mullaperiyar Dam to be opened

Idukki (Kerala), June 29 (UNI) With heavy rainfall continuing in the catchment areas, the shutters of the Mullaperiyar Dam will be opened at 10 am on Sunday.
The forest area within the Periyar Tiger Reserve, which forms the catchment, has been receiving intense rainfall, leading to a significant inflow into the dam, raising the water level to 136 feet.
Once the dam is opened, the released water will flow downstream to the Idukki Dam. Tamil Nadu authorities have informed Kerala that the shutters will be opened at 10 am.
A maximum of 1,000 cubic feet per second (cusecs) of water will be released. The Idukki District Collector stated that while residents living along the Periyar River should remain cautious, there is
no cause for panic.
People residing near the riverbanks are advised to stay vigilant. Those whose houses are located very close to the river, where water levels may rise, are urged to temporarily relocate to relatives’ homes or designated relief camps if necessary.
A total of 20 relief camps will be set up. If the maximum amount of water is released from Mullaperiyar, around 3,200 people from 883 families could be affected.
The public is strictly advised not to enter the Periyar River for bathing or any other activities while
the spillway shutters are open. Crossing the river should also be strictly avoided.
As the current water level in the Periyar River remains low, a significant rise in water levels is unlikely even after the release from Mullaperiyar.
