West Indies end Shreyas Iyer’s winning streak

Ranchi, Oct 9 (UNI) West Indies turned a daunting 250-run target into a historic triumph, ending Shreyas Iyer’s 10-match winning streak as India captain and exposing India’s inability to defend a massive total in a high-scoring T20 International here.
In a match that produced 501 runs, 79 boundaries and a relentless exchange of blows, the Caribbean side delivered a statement victory. Their successful chase of 250 became the second-highest in men’s T20I cricket, behind South Africa’s pursuit of 259 against West Indies at Centurion in 2023.
The defeat also brought Iyer’s impressive run as India captain to an abrupt halt. His 10 consecutive victories, accumulated between July and October 2026, had placed him among India’s most successful captains in terms of consecutive wins. Rohit Sharma remains ahead with a record 14 successive victories between November 2019 and July 2022.
But the bigger talking point was India’s failure to protect a total that would ordinarily have put the opposition under enormous pressure. West Indies’ pursuit raised questions over India’s execution with the ball, particularly when the contest demanded discipline under relentless attacking pressure.
Shai Hope led the Caribbean charge with a blistering 45-ball century, equalling the fastest T20I hundred by a batsman against India. Jacob Bethell had achieved the same feat in 45 balls during the 2026 T20 World Cup at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium.
Hope’s innings also took him into an elite group of West Indies batsmen with multiple T20I centuries, alongside Chris Gayle and Evin Lewis.
The extraordinary boundary count captured the scale of the contest. The two teams struck 79 boundaries, comprising 46 fours and 33 sixes, placing the match among the most explosive batting displays in men’s T20I history.
For India, the result was more than the loss of a match. It ended a promising captaincy streak and exposed the challenge of defending even a formidable total when the opposition sustains its attack deep into a chase.
For West Indies, the victory was a demonstration of their batting firepower and their capacity to chase a target that had appeared imposing on paper.
