WI stun India with record-breaking chase as Hope, Rutherford run riot

Ranchi, Oct 9 (UNI) Shai Hope and Sherfane Rutherford turned what looked like a mountain of 250 runs into a breathtaking batting spectacle as the West Indies stormed to a six-wicket victory over India in the second T20 International here on Friday.
Hope remained unbeaten on a magnificent 102 off 45 balls, while Rutherford blazed his way to 84 off just 37 deliveries. Their assault powered the West Indies to 252 for four in 18.3 overs, leaving India wondering how a total of 249 for five had proved insufficient.
It was a chase that demanded courage, calculation and extraordinary hitting. The West Indies delivered all three, with Hope providing the composure and Rutherford supplying the fireworks.
Hope struck six fours and nine sixes in an innings that combined timing with brute force. He kept his head even when the visitors stumbled early, losing Kamil Pooran and Shimron Hetmyer for just five runs.
Mayank Yadav appeared to have given India the perfect start, dismissing both batsmen in the opening over. But Hope refused to allow the early blows to dictate the course of the innings.
Rovman Powell added a brisk 24 off 13 balls to revive the chase. The decisive turn, however, came when Rutherford joined Hope and began treating the Indian bowling attack with remarkable disdain.
Rutherford hammered seven fours and as many sixes. The fourth-wicket pair added 120 runs in just 54 balls, transforming the contest with an assault that left India's bowlers searching for answers.
The partnership ended when Rutherford fell for 84 at 178 in the 15th over, caught by Sanju Samson off Kuldeep Yadav. By then, the equation had changed dramatically. The West Indies needed 72 runs from 35 balls, with Hope still at the crease and the momentum firmly with the visitors.
Romario Shepherd ensured that India were given no opportunity to stage a comeback. He smashed an unbeaten 34 off 13 balls, including three fours and three sixes, as he and Hope put on an unbroken 74 off just 26 deliveries.
The winning runs arrived in the 19th over, completing a chase that was as remarkable for its speed as for its authority.
Mayank finished with three wickets for 36 runs, but the early breakthroughs proved to be only a brief interruption in the West Indies' charge. Kuldeep Yadav took one wicket, while the remaining Indian bowlers struggled to stem the flow of runs. Axar Patel conceded 63 runs in 3.3 overs, while Kuldeep went for 53 in four.
Earlier, India had looked set for a commanding total after being asked to bat first. Sanju Samson led the charge with a superb 82 off 41 balls, striking nine fours and four sixes, as he made full use of the batting-friendly conditions to put the West Indies attack under sustained pressure.
Samson found an able partner in Ishan Kishan, who struck a brisk 43 off 22 deliveries, including six fours and two sixes. The pair added 97 runs for the second wicket, giving India the momentum after Abhishek Sharma's dismissal for 20.
Kishan's departure at 139 in the 12th over did little to slow India's scoring. Shivam Dube managed seven before falling to Roston Chase, while Samson was dismissed shortly afterwards for 82. India were briefly at 162 for four, offering the West Indies a chance to regain control.
Shreyas Iyer and Tilak Varma, however, ensured that the visitors would have little respite. Iyer smashed 40 off just 18 balls, hitting three fours and three sixes, while Varma remained unbeaten on 44 off 18 deliveries, with three fours and three sixes.
The pair's fifth-wicket partnership added 83 runs off just 32 balls, providing India with a late surge that took the total to 249 for five. Naman Dhir contributed an unbeaten four off one ball as India finished with a formidable run rate of 12.45.
The innings featured sustained aggression rather than a single burst of scoring. India plundered 79 runs in the powerplay, setting the tone for an innings in which the West Indies bowlers struggled to find consistent control.
Roston Chase was the standout bowler for the visitors, claiming three wickets for 24 runs in his four overs. Shamar Springer took two wickets but paid heavily for his lack of control, conceding 64 runs in four overs. The other bowlers also struggled to contain India's attacking approach.
India's total would ordinarily have put the opposition under enormous pressure. But Hope and Rutherford turned the chase into a statement of intent, showing that even a 250-run target can be within reach when batters combine control with fearless aggression.
The contrast between the two innings was striking. India relied on contributions from several batters to build a massive total, while the West Indies found two outstanding performers in Hope and Rutherford, whose partnership effectively took the game away from the hosts.
For India, the defeat will raise questions about their death bowling and their inability to contain a rampant opposition after making early inroads. Despite Mayank Yadav's three wickets, the attack could not prevent the West Indies from scoring at 13.62 runs per over.
For the West Indies, it was a triumph built on belief, power and two innings that changed the course of the match. Hope's unbeaten century provided the foundation, Rutherford's explosive knock broke India's resistance, and Shepherd's late assault ensured a finish that left the hosts with little time to recover.
