Youth Congress march turns tense near University hostel in Kerala capital

Thiruvananthapuram, Sep 30 (UNI) A Youth Congress march in the city turned tense on Wednesday night following a confrontation near the University of Kerala hostel, with protesters and students trading allegations and police using force to disperse the crowd.
The march, organised by the Youth Congress as part of its agitation demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, reached the hostel area when stones and bottles were allegedly hurled at the protesters from inside the hostel premises.
Youth Congress activists alleged that SFI activists staying in the hostel attacked the marchers. The students, however, alleged that the protesters threw burning torches into the hostel compound, prompting them to react.
The situation escalated after burning torches were allegedly thrown into the hostel premises. The students reportedly collected the torches and set them on fire.
The protesters also allegedly set tyres on fire on the road, adding to the tension in the area.
Police rushed to the spot and intervened to bring the situation under control. Police personnel entered the hostel premises amid the confrontation, while a lathi-charge was reportedly carried out against the protesters. Tear gas was also used to disperse the crowd.
The confrontation subsequently involved Youth Congress workers and police, even as the two sides continued to trade allegations over the incidents that triggered the violence.
The Youth Congress maintained that SFI activists inside the hostel attacked the marchers, while the students maintained that the protesters had first attacked the hostel by throwing burning torches into the compound.
Police personnel remained deployed in the area to prevent further escalation.

APPCB to explore alternative routes for heavy vehicles to reduce Visakhapatnam air pollution
