Youth Congress-SFI clash rocks Kerala capital: CM orders action, Pinarayi visits injured

Thiruvananthapuram, Sep 30 (UNI) Kerala Chief Minister V D Satheesan on Wednesday directed police to take stringent legal action against those responsible for the violent clash between Youth Congress workers and SFI activists near the University Men's Hostel at Palayam here, while Opposition Leader Pinarayi Vijayan visited the hostel and met students injured in the violence and subsequent police action.
The clash during a Youth Congress march demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar left several students, protesters and police personnel injured, with police using lathicharge, tear gas and water cannons to disperse the groups and bring the situation under control.
Satheesan convened an emergency meeting of senior police officers and directed them to proceed against those responsible irrespective of their political affiliation. He also instructed the authorities to ensure proper medical treatment for the injured and restore normalcy in the city.
Vijayan, who visited the University Hostel after the clashes, criticised the police action inside the hostel and demanded action against the personnel involved. He alleged that the police action against the students was carried out with the support of the government and said protests would be organised against what he termed police excesses and the government's policies.
The violence erupted after stones and bottles were allegedly hurled at Youth Congress marchers from the hostel premises. Youth Congress workers allegedly retaliated by throwing burning torches towards the hostel, escalating the confrontation.
Police subsequently entered the hostel premises and resorted to lathicharge, during which several students were injured. Tear gas and water cannons were also used as police attempted to clear the area.
The Youth Congress alleged that SFI activists inside the hostel initiated the attack by pelting stones and bottles at the march. The SFI, however, alleged that Youth Congress and KSU workers provoked the students and threw burning torches into the hostel premises. Both sides reported injuries.
The march was organised in the state capital demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and was led by Minister O J Janeesh, MP Shafi Parambil and Youth Congress leader K M Abhijith.
The clashes disrupted traffic in the capital for several hours, while heavy police deployment was made in the Palayam and Secretariat areas following the violence. Several injured persons were shifted to hospitals for treatment.
