Delhi Police IFSO team rescues several senior citizens from “Digital Arrest” across multiple states

New Delhi, Oct 18 (UNI) The Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations unit of the Delhi Police has once again proved the value of acting before time to prevent a victim losing everything when it comes to cyber crimes, and digital fraud cases.
The Proactive Victim Identification and Protection Team of the Financial Monitoring Cell (FMC), IFSO, by tracking suspicious money trails on its own, without waiting for complaints, identified victims of cyber fraud who were still under the fraudsters’ control, contacted them directly, and stopped further money transfers.
According to a senior police official, through timely intervention in five cases spread across Delhi, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat, the team has prevented a potential further loss of Rs 1,53,48,000 (approximately Rs 1.53 crore), most of it belonging to elderly citizens targeted through “Digital Arrest” scams.
In the instant matter, the trail began with a complaint received through the Cyber Helpline 1930, wherein a retired military officer on October 14, who lives in South West Delhi had received a call from fraudsters posing as TRAI officials.
They claimed that SIM cards and credit cards had been issued on his Aadhaar and misused in Canada, while he was also put on a video call with a person impersonating an IPS officer, who threatened him with arrest in a money laundering case.
Out of fear, the retired officer transferred a large sum of money in multiple transactions from his banks accounts.
Immediately after registering the complaint, the special team of the IFSO, Delhi Police, began tracing the funds, and upon scrutiny of the complainant’s one of the bank account, it showed that part of the money had moved to a first-layer private bank mule account located to Hyderabad, Telangana.
Further analysis showed that five other victims had paid money into the same account, and by following these linked transactions, the team was able to identify victims who were still being exploited and reached them in time.
The IFSO team also helped free one senior citizen from digital arrest after noticing that Rs 25 lakh was sent from a retired officer’s account to the same mule account, and it was after the cops called him, they got to know he was held up under digital arrest since September 17, and while his wife stayed with him, his son was in Australia.
He was terrified, and had initially refused to trust the real police team and repeatedly asked them not to call, as the people on his video calls claimed to be senior police officers.
The team stayed patient, adding that they will not ask for any money, shared awareness videos on WhatsApp, and invited him to verify their identity by calling the National Cyber Crime Helpline 1930 and speaking to officer concerned, after which he gained some confidence.
Later, he shared details, and the team registered an E-FIR, later sending staff from Cyber Police Station, Dwarka, to his home, whose visit fully assured him.
There were more such cases, where the team was able to prevent further damage to the victims, and has also appealed to the public that there is no such thing as “Digital Arrest” in law.
No police, CBI, NIA, TRAI, RBI or court official will ever arrest anyone over a video call or ask for money to “verify” or “secure” funds.
