Maha: Four killed, 5 injured in explosion at welding workshop in Yavatmal

Mumbai, Sep 26 (UNI) Four persons were killed and five others injured after a container carrying gelatin sticks exploded during welding work at a workshop in Umarkhed area of Maharashtra's Yavatmal district today, police said.
The incident took place at a welding workshop on Dhanaki Road, where a tractor used for blasting-related work had been brought for repairs.
According to police, welding work was in progress when the metal container containing gelatin sticks, which was attached to the tractor, suddenly exploded. The blast triggered a fire and caused serious burn injuries to people present at the workshop.
Four of the injured later succumbed to their injuries, while five others were rushed to Umarkhed Sub-District Hospital for treatment. Those in critical condition were subsequently referred to other hospitals for further medical care, police said.
An air cylinder located near the tractor's rear tyre was also found to have burst in the incident, officials said.
The explosion caused panic in the area, following which local residents rushed to the workshop and helped in shifting the injured to hospital.
Police reached the spot and began an investigation into the circumstances leading to the explosion. Officials are also examining how the gelatin sticks were being transported and handled and whether all required safety measures were followed.
The exact cause of the blast and the circumstances under which the explosive material was kept at the welding workshop are being investigated, police said.
The identities of the deceased and injured are yet to be ascertained.
