Supreme Court asks Raj Govt to form SIT team for probing illegal river sand mining

Jaipur, Nov 7 (UNI) The Supreme Court has asked the Rajasthan government to form a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe complaints of illegal sand mining in the Jojari, Luni and Baandi river system in the State's western region.
The SIT to be headed by an officer of the rank of Inspector General (IG) or above, has to undertake a comprehensive probe into organised illegal sand (bajri) mining activities affecting the Luni, Jojari and Baandi rivers and their tributaries in Jodhpur, Balotra and Pali district, a division bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta, stated in a recent order.
The Superintendents of Police of the affected three districts namely Jodhpur, Balotra and Pali should also be members of the special team, the court order said.
“The investigation shall extend to identifying the persons and entities involved in these mining activities, their networks through which the illegal extraction, transportation and sale of sand were organised. The team will also identify beneficiaries of such operations,” the court directed.
The SIT also has to examine whether public officials facilitated or enabled illegal mining, including instances of collusion, dereliction of duty or failure to act despite knowledge of violations.
The bench also expressed concerns over fallouts of contamination in these rivers on lives of 20 lakh people.
In an order on October 26, the court also restrained the State from granting permissions for the establishment of new industrial units along or in the vicinity of the riverine ecosystem until the high flood line and buffer zones are scientifically determined. UNI SKS CDS
