Trump signs Greenland deal giving US broad military authority on the island

Washington, Sep 22 (UNI) President Donald Trump on Tuesday signed a deal on the security of the semi-autonomous Danish territory of Greenland, in a bid to end the standoff over the strategic island.
President Trump, Greenland Premier Jens-Frederik Nielsen and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen signed the security agreement on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The White House released the text of the deal shortly after the signing ceremony.
The signed agreement notably stops short of Trump's call for the U.S. to take over Greenland as a U.S. territory, CBS News reported.
The agreement reaffirms the sovereignty of Greenland, which is part of the Kingdom of Denmark, but gives the U.S. broad access to the island's airspace and territory.
The plan allows the U.S. to expand the existing Pituffik Space Base, the northernmost U.S. military installation which serves as an early-warning system for incoming missiles.
The agreement also says the U.S. can establish additional bases at the sites known as Narsarsuaq and Mestersvig, which are roughly 950 miles apart. Any of the three parties can propose more "defense areas" as needed, subject to approval by the others.
The deal, which has no expiration date, also blocks non-NATO countries from establishing bases on the island without agreement from the parties. The agreement persists even if Greenland eventually becomes independent from Denmark. It intensifies screening for foreign investment from non-NATO and non-European union members, a move aimed at blocking influence from China and Russia.
The leaders of Greenland and Denmark emphasized that the deal was a reflection of the changing security landscape in the Arctic. Trump has long toyed with the possibility of acquiring Greenland, by force if necessary, drawing criticism from NATO allies.
In a speech at the U.N. gathering, Trump said the deal gives the U.S. "permanent control over security and all other needs on that territory" and emphasized that "no U.S. adversary will ever be permitted to establish a military presence in Greenland any more, or ⁠make sensitive investments there without our express written approval."
Trump added that the new text “greatly protects” Europe and “very much enhances NATO."
Danish and Greenlandic officials have emphasized that the U.S. military arrangement will not compromise the territory’s sovereignty—a fear among Greenlanders following Trump’s pressure campaign.
Some critics have questioned whether the new deal differs all that much from the existing 1951 defense agreement that gave the U.S. military extensive rights in Greenland.
The U.S. already has one base in Greenland, the Pituffik Space Base, which is located in the northwest of the territory and provides missile warning and space surveillance capabilities.
Per the new deal, the U.S. will be allowed to establish additional "defense area[s]" on the island, specifically at "Narsarsuaq and Mestersvig."
