Actor S.Ve.Shekar again faces ire for unsavoury remarks against woman journos

Chennai, Apr 1 (UNI) Already mired in a controversy for his derogatory remarks against women journos in which the Madras High Court awarded him one month jail term, popular Tamil film actor and comedian S.Ve.Shekhar has found himself involved in yet another fresh row for a similar
offence--making unsavoury remarks against a woman journo.
His act at a drama event in the city triggered condemnations from media organisations, which demanded slapping of fresh cases against him and punish him for not mending his ways even
after being admonished and convicted by the court.
The fresh row surfaced when the actor, during a play recently he was performing at the Narada
Gana Sabha , a point where several carnatic vocal and music concerts, stage plays and dramas
will be held, had allegedly asked a female journo, who came to interview him, to sit on his lap
after she asked for a seat, which formed part of a scene in the play.
One of the scenes in the play in which Shekhar donned the role of a politician, a female journo
came to interview him.
When he asked him to sit, she found there were no chairs around and asked him where to sit as
there was no space.
To this,Shekhar had allegedly pointed to his lap and asked her to sit on it.
Further making the matters worse, he said "these journos are always arrogant. There is so much space here (pointing to his lap again), to which the journo said there is no space".
His act in the play triggered strident opposition with various media associations, including the
Chennai Press Club (CPC) demanding stringent action against him for not mending his ways
even after his one month jail term awarded by the trial court was confirmed by the High Court
for making derogatory remarks against women journos.
The actor had, however, filed an appeal in the Supreme Court against the High Court order, which had upheld the trial court order convicting him and sentencing him to undergo one month simple imprisonment for his remarks made in 2018.
CPC President Suresh, in a statement on Tuesday said, the Chennai City police should file a case against the actor, take punitive action and also file a petition in the Apex court seeking to reject the actor's appeal and punish him.
It may be recalled that the Madras High Court had on January 2, 2025, on a plea filed by him, had refused to interfere with the conviction and one-month simple imprisonment awarded to him by the trial court in February 2024 against Shekhar in a case relating to sharing a Facebook post containing derogatory remarks against women journalists.
On an earlier appeal filed by him, the High Court had dismissed a criminal revision petition filed by
the actor in March last year challenging the verdict passed by a special court for MP/MLA cases.
The Court also ordered the suspension of his verdict for a period of 90 days in order to enable the convict to go on appeal before the Supreme Court.
