Organs of accident victim save 8 lives in Bengaluru

Bengaluru, Apr 2 (UNI) In an extraordinary display of courage and compassion, the family of a 28-year-old road accident victim gave a fresh lease of life to eight individuals across the city by donating the deceased's organs to a private hospital.
The victim, who sustained a critical head injury and severe oral bleeding in a road accident, was rushed to the Fortis Hospital, Nagarbhavi, in an unstable condition. A CT scan revealed a rapidly enlarging blood clot in the brain. Despite immediate medical intervention and intensive care, his condition continued to deteriorate, and he was declared brain dead by the designated Brain Death Certification Committee.
Following this, a multi-disciplinary team of doctors counselled the bereaved family regarding the option of organ donation. In the midst of their grief, the family displayed immense courage and agreed to donate the victim’s eyes, lungs, liver, heart valves, kidneys, and skin. The multi-organ retrieval procedure lasted approximately five hours.
The donated organs were allocated to multiple hospitals in Bengaluru, facilitating life-saving transplants. Both eyes were donated to Narayana Netralaya, both lungs to Manipal Hospital, the liver to HCG Hospital, heart valves to Manipal Hospital, and one kidney to Ramaiah Hospital. The second kidney was successfully transplanted into a 41-year-old woman at Fortis Hospital, Nagarbhavi, who had been suffering from kidney failure for the past seven years.
To ensure the swift transportation of the lungs and heart valves, a green corridor was created between Fortis Hospital, Nagarbhavi, and Manipal Hospital, HAL-Old Airport Road. The distance of approximately 20 km was covered in just 29 minutes, ensuring timely transplantation.
Dr S Pradeep Kumar, Medical Director at Fortis Hospital stated, "Despite urgent medical intervention, the donor suffered a severe brain haemorrhage due to multiple blood clots. Unfortunately, he could not be revived. We deeply appreciate the family's selfless decision to embrace organ donation, providing hope and life to many. This donation would not have been possible without the dedication of our medical team and the seamless coordination with traffic police and SOTTO."
Dr Tejaswini Parthasarathy, Facility Director at Fortis Hospital, Nagarbhavi, highlighted the complexity of the procedure, saying, "Retrieving eight organs in a short span of time requires immense precision, coordination, and skilled medical expertise. The timely transportation of organs, especially the lungs and heart valves, was crucial. Our team worked tirelessly to ensure the best possible outcomes for recipients."
According to National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO) data, nearly five lakh Indians suffer from organ failure annually, yet only 2-3 per cent receive transplants. In 2022, Delhi recorded 11 cadaver donations, leading to the retrieval of 30 organs. The gap between organ demand and availability remains vast due to lack of awareness and misconceptions.
Experts stress that increasing public awareness about organ donation can bridge this gap and save countless lives. UNI BDN SSP
