All Govt hospitals in Odisha directed to complete fire safety measures within 15 Days

Bhubaneswar, May 6 (UNI) The Odisha Government on Tuesday directed all government hospitals—from Community Health Centres (CHCs) to Medical College Hospitals—to complete all fire safety measures within fifteen days.
Health and Family Welfare Secretary Aswathy S, who chaired a review meeting on fire safety in government hospitals, issued the directive.
According to official sources, joint committees comprising fire officers, electrical inspectors, engineers from the Roads and Buildings Department, and Chief District Medical and Public Health Officers have been tasked with inspecting fire safety conditions in government health facilities within their respective jurisdictions.
These committees will identify gaps in fire safety infrastructure and submit a detailed list of the necessary corrective measures, along with cost estimates, within fifteen days.
Given the current situation, the Health Secretary emphasized prioritizing high-risk areas such as Operation Theatres (OTs), Intensive Care Units (ICUs), Special Newborn Care Units (SNCUs), and installations with heavy power loads like CT scan and MRI machines.
She also directed officials to ensure proper and safe integration of generators with the electrical wiring systems in hospital buildings to prevent short circuits.
It was decided that, moving forward, fire safety systems would be incorporated into hospital building plans from the design stage to avoid the need for structural retrofitting after construction is completed.
District authorities have been instructed to implement all corrective measures in line with electrical and fire safety certification standards.
The State Government has already allocated approximately ₹300 crore to enhance fire safety in government health institutions.
The Health Secretary assured that necessary funds would be provided to each district based on their corrective action plans and stressed that the work must be completed within a defined timeframe.
Additionally, she instructed that regular mock fire drills be conducted in coordination with local fire officials, review meetings be held with stakeholders, and that ongoing maintenance of electrical and fire safety equipment be ensured.
A state-level joint team will monitor the progress of these initiatives through field visits.
