Himachal: Row erupts over payment of Chief Secretary’s Holi party at hotel

Shimla, Apr 26 (UNI) The Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu-led government finds itself mired in controversy over the payment for a Holi party hosted at the Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation’s (HPTDC) Hotel Holiday Home.
Invitations for the event were issued in the personal names of Chief Secretary Prabodh Saxena and his wife Aniruta, with no official mention of the Chief Secretary’s office, raising questions about whether public funds should be used for a private gathering.
When asked about the issue, HPTDC Chairman R.S. Bali evaded direct responses, refusing to clarify whether the event was officially sanctioned or privately organised.
Meanwhile, the Chief Minister’s Media Advisor, Naresh Chauhan, publicly stated that the Chief Secretary should personally settle the bill, adding fuel to the growing debate.
In defense, Chief Secretary Prabodh Saxena claimed that offices like the Raj Bhavan, Chief Minister's Office, and Chief Secretary’s Office are authorised to hold official events using treasury funds.
He justified the billing of the General Administration Department (GAD) by citing protocol procedures, arguing that the media has misunderstood the official process.
Despite these assertions, the controversy has sparked sharp criticism, with opposition voices and the public alleging misuse of public funds for personal celebrations. The key issue remains the lack of clarity — whether the Holi party was an official function or a private event — especially since the invitation carried no official designation.
The matter has led to widespread resentment among citizens, who view it as another example of bureaucratic misuse of state resources.
Political observers suggest that the Sukhu government’s muted stance on the issue could further erode public trust.
As the controversy intensifies, all eyes are now on whether the payment will eventually come from the Chief Secretary’s personal funds or if taxpayers will bear the burden.
