Karnataka HC stays criminal proceedings against MLA Yatnal

Bengaluru, Apr 1 (UNI) The Karnataka High Court on Tuesday stayed the proceedings in a criminal case against MLA Basanagouda Patil Yatnal over his alleged derogatory remarks made against actress Ranya Rao.
Patil, who was recently expelled from the BJP for alleged anti-party activities, had moved the High Court seeking quashing of the First Information Report (FIR) registered against him in the matter.
Justice Pradeep Singh Yerur, after hearing preliminary arguments, directed the state government to submit its response and posted the matter for further hearing in two weeks. Meanwhile, the court ordered a stay on the criminal proceedings against Yatnal.
The case stems from Ranya's arrest in connection with allegations of gold smuggling using VIP routes at airports. Yatnal had allegedly made derogatory remarks about Rao while commenting on the case, stating in Kannada, "There were lapses by customs officials, and necessary action should be taken against them. She (Ranya Rao) had gold all over her body, hiding it wherever ..., and smuggled it in."
Following these remarks, a relative of Ranya filed a complaint against Patil, leading to the registration of an FIR at the High Grounds Police Station in Bengaluru. The FIR invoked Section 79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 (BNS), which pertains to words, gestures, or acts intended to insult the modesty of a woman.
During the hearing, the complainant’s counsel urged the court not to stay the FIR, citing the seriousness of the allegations. The court, while acknowledging these concerns, observed that the matter may require trial but deemed it appropriate to grant an interim stay on the proceedings against Yatnal until the next hearing.
