Maha human rights body issues notices to state over Suryawanshi's custodial death

Mumbai, Mar 21 (UNI) Nearly three months after Somnath Suryawanshi died in judicial custody, a magisterial inquiry has held the police responsible for the death, according to a report submitted to the Maharashtra State Human Rights Commission (MSHRC).
Reacting to the report, the MSHRC issued notices to the chief secretary, additional chief secretary, additional director general of police CID (crimes), and the deputy superintendent of police (CID) Parbhani, seeking their reports in the matter.
Suryawanshi's death snowballed into a major political issue with Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi visiting his family in Parbhani even as the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi-INDIA bloc targeted the Devendra Fadnavis-led MahaYuti-NDA dispensation.
A law student, Suryavanshi (35), who hailed from the Wadar community, died at a state-run hospital in Parbhani on December 15, 2024 while in judicial custody. He had been arrested in connection with violence in Parbhani after the incident of desecration of a replica of the Constitution of India placed in a glass box alongside the statue of Babasaheb Ambedkar.
The MSHRC has also issued notice to all the police officials named in the report, granting them an opportunity to be heard.
The matter will be next heard on June 23. UNI AAA XC SSP
