Mamata remembers Rajiv Gandhi on his death anniversary

Kolkata, May 21 (UNI) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday fondly remembered former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on his death anniversary and said he was martyred for the cause of India.

"Fondly remembering late Rajiv Gandhi, former Prime Minister of India, on his death anniversary today," Banerjee said while remembering the former PM as a visionary.

"Rajiv ji was a visionary and a martyr for the cause of India," she said.

On May 21, 1991, the former Prime Minister arrived in Tamil Nadu’s Sriperumbudur for an election campaign. He was greeted by hundreds of supporters at the event. However, minutes into that campaign, he was assassinated when a person from the crowd approached him with an explosive hidden inside a garland.
