Meghalaya CM treks picturesque Rhododendron Riot

Shillong, Apr 7 (UNI) Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Monday trekked the picturesque Rhododendron Riot, located in Upper Shillong under East Khasi Hills district.
The Rhododendron Riot trek is on the way to Upper Shillong and is about 4 km long and takes about 2.5-hour leisurely trek through untouched pine and rhododendron trees, babbling streams and also remnants of World War II in the form of bunkers scattered around, to complete.
The trail cuts through the Shillong Peak–Upper Shillong forest reserve and is part of the Shillong Rhododendron State Park.
“It is a historic trek. This route was used by the Britishers in the earlier times. On the way, you will actually see the bunkers that were used during the World War, which are still visible. There are also retaining walls constructed during the British time, very systematically done,” the Chief Minister said.
Sangma was also keen to further develop the trail with signboards and benches and other amenities.
“This part of the trail is not just beautiful but is also important because some of the water sources for Shillong city are located here. Moreover, the air quality is pristine,” the Chief Minister said and encouraged the state as well as tourists to come and experience the trek.
“We are developing this trail,” Sangma, a passionate trekker himself, assured.
Forest department officials, who accompanied the Chief Minister, informed him that the Rhododendron Riot trek (forest) has been well protected; some of the endemic and rare species of plants and trees can be found here and are therefore ecologically important.
There are also plans to further protect this forest under the "Green Meghalaya" scheme, a Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES) initiative, to incentivise forest conservation by providing financial rewards to communities and individuals who protect natural forests for a minimum of 30 years.
