Imphal, Mar 7 (UNI) The deadline to lay down arms in Manipur as given by Governor of Manipur AK Bhalla came to an end on Thursday following which combing operations were conducted in various parts of the state.
Police said on Friday that a total of 196 different types of weapons including tear gas guns, various ammunitions and other miscellaneous items were voluntarily surrendered by the public in Churachandpur, Bishnupur, Thoubal, Imphal East, Imphal West, Kakching, Jiribam and Pherzawl Districts during the last 24 hours.
Joint security forces conducted combing and search operations at Imphal West, Imphal East, Churachandpur, Kangpokpi, Thoubal, Kakching, Bishnupur, Jiribam and Tamenglong districts resulting in recovery of 36 arms, 129 ammunitions, seven explosives, 21 other miscellaneous items . Twelve bunkers were destroyed during the operations at Haoraothel , K.Langnom and Khengjang area in Kangpokpi District.
Security personnel have started maintaining vigil to clear the roads and destroy bunkers. Large numbers of bunkers still exist in Kangpokpi district. The Union Home Minister Amit Shah had directed that all roads be cleared so that people can move freely. All except Kuki organizations have welcomed the initiative of the government. Confrontations were reported as security personnel tried to dismantle bunkers.
