No cheers for drinkers as Mizoram sticks to prohibition, but liquor still flows

Aizawl, Feb 21 (UNI) Chief Minister Lalduhoma has shot down speculation that the Zoram People's Movement (ZPM) government plans to lift prohibition and open liquor shops in Mizoram, asserting in the state assembly on Friday that the matter has never been discussed by his government.
Speaking during the budget session in response to allegations from opposition legislators, Lalduhoma, however, acknowledged that Excise & Narcotics Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar intends to seek an amendment to the Mizoram Liquor Prohibition Act, 2019, during the current session—aimed at regulating wine and beer.
Liquor prohibition has remained a volatile political issue in Mizoram, with successive governments caught between public demand and pressure from the influential church. The state has experienced multiple shifts in alcohol policy, swinging between dry laws and controlled sales.
