HP speaker addresses MLA invitation issue at public events

Shimla, Mar 21 (UNI) Himachal Pradesh Vidhan Sabha Speaker responded to concerns raised in the Assembly on Friday regarding the lack of invitations extended to elected Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) for public functions.
The Speaker clarified that the issue would be taken up by the Members' Amenity and Protocol Committee for further review.
The matter was raised during the Zero Hour when BJP MLA from Sundernagar, Rakesh Jamwal, informed the House that he had not been invited to the Nalwar state-level fair.
In his intervention, the Speaker acknowledged that this issue fell under the purview of both the Members' Amenity and Protocol panels, which would examine it.
Members across party lines voiced concerns over repeated instances of elected MLAs being overlooked by the government for invitations to public events, while non-elected political figures were extended invitations.
The Speaker assured the House that he would immediately address the matter and ensure that MLAs receive the respect and recognition they deserve in the future. He also stated that instructions would be issued to avoid such situations going forward.
Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri, speaking on the matter, pointed out that the Nalwar Fair, in question, was organised by the Department of Language, Art, and Culture. He assured that the sentiment of the House would be conveyed to the department’s officers.
Agnihotri also raised concerns over the gap between the government's commitment to giving special invitations to MLAs from all parties and the reality of the situation. He questioned why he, as an elected representative, had been left out of such a major event, which is considered one of the most significant in the state.
Public Works Minister Vikramaditya, expressing similar concerns, reminded the House that when he was in the opposition, he had also been overlooked for public events.
He noted that despite no BJP MLA being elected in his constituency, a former BJP candidate had received an invitation to the state-level fair. This, he argued, showed that the issue of not inviting MLAs was not exclusive to the current Congress government but had been a concern during the previous administration as well.
