Odisha to conduct civil defence mock drills in urban areas in 12 districts on Wednesday

Bhubaneswar, May 6 (UNI) Odisha will conduct civil defence mock drills across 12 districts on Wednesday to prepare for potential wartime situations, Director General of Fire and Emergency Services Sudhanshu Sarangi announced on Tuesday.
According to official sources, sirens will be sounded for five minutes at various locations in Angul, Khordha, Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Ganjam, Jagatsinghpur, Dhenkanal, Puri, Koraput, and Sundargarh districts at 4 PM on Wednesday.
The mock drill will continue for a week, beginning with exercises in several urban areas of the state tomorrow. The Odisha State Disaster Management Authority (OSDMA) will deploy sirens in coastal regions as part of the drill.
A preparatory meeting was chaired by Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja to oversee the arrangements.
"The purpose of this mock drill is to raise public awareness and preparedness in the event of a possible enemy air attack. Citizens are advised to take shelter under concrete roofs during the siren alerts," Sarangi stated.
He further added that the first phase of the mock drills, targeting urban areas, will later be expanded to rural regions. Control rooms will be established at both the state and district levels.
The Director General emphasized that these drills are precautionary measures to ensure public readiness. District administrations have been instructed to identify safe shelters, particularly for slum dwellers and those living in makeshift or "kutcha" houses.
The government will also involve volunteers from the National Cadet Corps (NCC) and the National Service Scheme (NSS) in the exercise.
The drill is expected to last for 30 minutes, and officials have urged public cooperation to ensure preparedness for any emergency. Emergency services will remain fully operational during this time.
Volunteers at cyclone shelters will activate sirens along Odisha's 480-kilometer coastline. Residents are requested to suspend all outdoor activities and move to the nearest shelter during the drills.
