Yediyurappa to participate in all-night protest satyagraha against price hikes

(Rptng, Coorrecting day in Intro)
Bengaluru, Apr 1 (UNI) Former Karnataka Chief Minister and BJP Parliamentary Board member BS Yediyurappa on Tuesday announced his participation in the all-night protest satyagraha organised by the BJP, demanding the immediate rollback of "anti-people" price hikes by the state government.
Speaking to reporters at his Dhavalagiri residence in Dollars Colony here, the Senior BJP leader stated that the common people are struggling due to the continuous rise in prices. The protest will begin at Freedom Park, and he urged citizens, irrespective of political affiliation, to join the movement and make it successful.
Criticising the Congress government, Yediyurappa alleged that an internal power struggle for the Chief Minister’s chair is taking precedence over public welfare. He declared that the BJP’s agitation would persist for several days and that Union Minister Pralhad Joshi would lead a similar demonstration in Mysuru.
The veteran BJP leader expressed confidence that sustained media coverage against the price hikes could pressure the government into reconsideration, noting that journalists, too, are affected by rising costs. However, when asked about the recent expulsion of BJP leader Basanagouda Patil Yatnal, he refused to comment.
Targeting Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Yediyurappa accused his administration of running a "Tughlaq Darbar" despite securing an overwhelming mandate from the people. He claimed that the Congress government had neglected public welfare, subjecting common citizens to undue hardship.
He further condemned the decision to provide a 4% reservation for Muslims in public works contracts, questioning, "What crime have Hindus committed?" He clarified that the BJP is not against Muslims but maintains that a Chief Minister should treat all citizens equally.
The former Chief Minister also criticised the Congress government for multiple price hikes, including increase in petrol, bus fares, and milk prices. He pointed out that milk prices had been raised by Rs 4 per litre in one go, totalling a Rs 9 hike per litre within a year. Electricity tariffs had also been increased by 36 paise per unit for the second time under this government, making life difficult for lower and middle-income groups.
Additionally, he highlighted a surge in costs for installing transformers for farmers, which had jumped from Rs 30,000 to Rs 2.5 lakh. He accused the Congress government of drastically raising stamp duty, SR value, and guidance value by 100% to 1000%, making essential commodities unaffordable and hindering the people’s ability to live peacefully.
