'We will replace horse-drawn carriages with e-carriages in Kolkata': UDMA Minister Agnimitra Paul

Kolkata, Oct 7 (UNI) West Bengal Urban Development and Municipal Affairs (UDMA) Minister Agnimitra Paul on Wednesday proposed a pilot project to replace Kolkata's horse-drawn tourist carriages with electric alternatives, signalling the government's intent to begin phasing horses out of one of the city's most recognisable heritage attractions.
Paul made the proposal at a meeting with representatives of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, Kolkata Police, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India, CAPE Foundation and the horse-carriage owners' association to discuss how the transition could be implemented while protecting the city's heritage, public safety and the livelihoods of carriage operators.
The proposed pilot would test heritage-style electric carriages on Kolkata's existing carriage routes, allowing authorities and operators to assess their safety, operating costs, charging requirements and suitability for passenger rides before considering a wider rollout.
The move could mark a significant shift for the carriage trade around the Maidan and Victoria Memorial, where horse-drawn carriages have for decades formed part of Kolkata's tourist landscape.
Animal welfare groups have repeatedly raised concerns over the treatment and condition of horses used in the trade, while operators depend on carriage rides for their livelihoods.
The electric vehicles would be designed to retain the visual character of traditional carriages while eliminating the need for horses. The proposed pilot would also allow the authorities to work out how existing carriage owners and drivers could be incorporated into a new system.
