Sikkim: Tunnel panel stresses safety measures for NHPC project in Soreng

Gangtok, Oct 7 (UNI) The Tunnel Monitoring Committee conducted a joint inspection of the Racey Road Tunnel at Racey in Sikkim's Soreng district on Wednesday to assess its structural condition, maintenance requirements, restoration needs and safety measures, particularly in connection with the NHPC’s Rangit Stage IV Hydroelectric Project.
The committee sought a detailed assessment from NHPC officials regarding the structural condition of the tunnel, ongoing and remaining works, maintenance and restoration requirements and other safety-related issues.
Members also placed a series of recommendations before the NHPC Rangit Stage IV HE Project, with special emphasis on further strengthening the tunnel’s safety and security system and completing the remaining works within the stipulated time.
Relief Commissioner-cum-Assistant Secretary of the Land Revenue and Disaster Management Department Mingma T stressed the need for strict compliance with prescribed safety standards and guidelines adopted by NHPC.
He also directed the concerned authorities to undertake necessary technical testing and submit all relevant technical documents for further examination. The committee also proposed formation of a sub-committee for regular monitoring, evaluation and coordination.
Soreng District Collector Dheeraj Subedi drew attention to issues concerning the safety and convenience of students, local residents and other road users. He emphasised proper construction and maintenance of the drainage system inside the tunnel and provision of safe pedestrian walkways.
During the inspection, R.M. Sahu, DGM-HRT of the Rangit Stage IV HE Project, made a detailed presentation on the condition of the Racey Road Tunnel and the Diversion Road Tunnel under SH-22/NH-510 near the dam area, outlining restoration, repair and upgradation requirements.
NHPC General Manager and Project Head S.P. Lal, tunnel expert Karma C. Lepcha, Consultant (R&B) O.P. Sharma, DPO Rajani Pega, and officials of the Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority and Soreng District Disaster Management Authority were also present. UNI MBN NST
