50 killed in Myanmar airstrike near Mizoram border

Aizawl, Oct 1 (UNI) At least 50 people were killed and 21 others seriously injured in an airstrike by Myanmar military aircraft on Kyauktaw, a major trade centre near the Mizoram border in northern Rakhine State, sources in Lawngtlai said on Thursday.
The bombardment on Monday targeted areas around the main bridge over the Kaladan river and a market locally known as Indian Bazar, with Arakanese Buddhists and Indian Muslims among those killed, the sources said.
Kyauktaw lies along the Kaladan, a major river that originates in Myanmar and flows through Mizoram, where it is known as the Chhimtuipui, before reaching the Bay of Bengal near Sittwe.
The town has emerged as a key trading point for southern Mizoram, with goods from Lawngtlai and Siaha districts transported there before being distributed to other parts of Rakhine State.
With the Myanmar military having blocked major trade routes from Yangon and Mandalay, Kyauktaw has become an important supply route for essential commodities for Rakhine State, which has a population of around three million.
The latest airstrike has raised concerns over the safety of cross-border transporters operating between Mizoram and Myanmar.
Sources advised transporters carrying essential supplies to Salachhuah in southern Chin State and other parts of Rakhine State to exercise caution, particularly along border areas where the Myanmar military has intensified its offensive against the United League of Arakan and its armed wing, the Arakan Army.
