Meghalaya CEO directs election officials to ensure voter-friendly measures

Shillong, Oct 1 (UNI) Meghalaya Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Dr B.D.R. Tiwari has directed all election officials to ensure the effective implementation of voter-friendly measures to assist electors during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR), 2026 of electoral rolls in the state.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Wednesday extended the timeline for the SIR of electoral rolls in Meghalaya to October 26, when the final revised electoral roll is scheduled to be published. The earlier deadline for the publication of the final roll in the state was October 21.
Tiwari explained that the extension of the SIR schedule is intended to provide additional time for the completion of the notice, hearing, claims, and objections process, as well as the disposal of cases before the final roll is published.
In keeping with ECI directions, an adequate number of help desks and special camps are being set up across Meghalaya for the homeless, persons living in night shelters, labourers, the economically disadvantaged, and other vulnerable sections to ensure they are appropriately facilitated in matters relating to electoral registration.
Meghalaya has 21,69,243 electors on the Draft Electoral Roll, according to the latest data. Of the 6,51,735 notices generated during the revision process, 6,51,066 have been delivered, while 619 are pending delivery. So far, 5,90,784 hearings have been completed, accounting for 90.65 per cent of the notices generated.
After the prescribed process, 910 electors have been found ineligible for inclusion in the Final Electoral Roll, while 19,07,182 electors have been retained for final publication as of today.
Tiwari clarified that the ECI extended the timeline for the SIR of electoral rolls in Meghalaya to October 26 in order to facilitate electors whose records could not be mapped with the previous SIR-2005 roll or where discrepancies were detected during the revision.
“Such electors are required to be given an opportunity to appear before the concerned election authorities and furnish supporting documents,” he emphasised.
The SIR exercise in Meghalaya was initiated with house-to-house enumeration in June, with the draft electoral roll subsequently published for claims and objections ahead of the notice and hearing process.
