Eggs, tomatoes thrown towards Punjab CM Mann’s convoy; BJP leader Ravneet Bittu detained

By Neeraj Bali
Chandigarh, Sep 19 (UNI) BJP leader and former union minister Ravneet Singh Bittu was detained by Punjab Police today after eggs and tomatoes were allegedly thrown towards Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s convoy during a protest outside Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) in Ludhiana.
Reports differed on whether Bittu himself threw the items or was part of the group doing so; video reports showed him protesting with eggs and tomatoes as the cavalcade passed.
Bittu also held up a liquor bottle towards the passing convoy, saying he was “returning” it to Mann. The protest came a day after Bittu alleged that eggs and tomatoes had been hurled at his own cavalcade near Batala while he was travelling to Pathankot to join the BJP’s “Nasha Mukt Punjab Yatra”.
“Yesterday, eggs and tomatoes were thrown at my cavalcade. Today I have returned them,” Bittu said after the protest. He said BJP workers would exercise their “democratic right to protest” against the Punjab government if AAP workers opposed BJP leaders, rallies and yatras.
Bittu accused AAP supporters of carrying out Friday’s attack on his convoy and said vehicles in the cavalcade had been damaged. AAP has denied involvement in the incident, according to reports. The allegations have not been independently established.
During Saturday’s protest, Bittu also targeted Mann and AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal, alleging that Kejriwal was “looting Punjab from Delhi”. No evidence was cited by Bittu to support the allegation.
Police detained Bittu near the PAU gate and took him away from the protest site. India Today reported that Bittu was at the university gate and was not close to the chief minister’s convoy when he was detained.
“Today Punjab Police detained us, but our spirits remain high,” Bittu said in a social media post after his detention. He said the BJP would continue raising issues concerning Punjab and hold what he described as peaceful and democratic protests outside the chief minister’s programmes and offices when required.
Mann was visiting PAU to attend the Kisan Mela when the protest took place.
The confrontation followed Friday’s incident near Batala in which Bittu said eggs and other objects were thrown at his cavalcade while he was travelling to participate in the BJP’s anti-drug campaign. His office alleged that some of those involved were linked to AAP and called for an investigation.
