Jakhar questions Punjab's law & order after police safety advisory

Chandigarh, Sep 19 (UNI) Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Sunil Jakhar today questioned the law-and-order situation in Punjab, citing a reported police advisory asking personnel to take precautions while travelling following a series of attacks on officers.
“Criminals in Punjab no longer fear the police; instead, the police themselves appear to be living in fear of gangsters and goons,” Jakhar, a former Punjab BJP president, said in a post on social media platform X.
Jakhar said the advisory had been issued against the backdrop of killings of police personnel in the state and described it as a reflection of the security challenges facing the force.
According to Jakhar, police personnel have been advised to avoid travelling alone, not wear their uniforms while commuting, refrain from using two-wheelers and, where possible, use public transport.
“Is this the same Punjab Police that once eliminated terrorism from the state?” Jakhar said, questioning the state government over the prevailing security situation.
His remarks came after Assistant Sub-Inspector Harjit Singh was shot dead allegedly by two unidentified motorcycle-borne assailants while on duty near the Bhagtanwala grain market in Amritsar. The killing was the latest in a series of attacks on Punjab Police personnel this year.
Punjab Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav visited the family of the slain officer after the attack. Police said CCTV footage showed two men arriving in the area on a scooter shortly before the shooting, according to local media reports.
Jakhar said the precautions reportedly prescribed for police personnel raised questions about the government's handling of law and order.
The details of the advisory cited by Jakhar were also reported by Indian media today.
There was no immediate response from the Punjab government to Jakhar's criticism.
