Ambala's Rs 594-crore 1857 Martyrs' Memorial to open Nov 15; Free entry for 500 visitors

Ambala, Nov 6 (UNI) The Rs 594-crore memorial in Ambala Cantonment commemorating India's 1857 uprising against British rule will open to the public on November 15, with free entry restricted to 500 visitors daily for the first month and advance booking compulsory, Haryana Energy Minister Anil Vij said on Friday.
The 22-acre memorial, inaugurated by union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday, has been developed to honour thousands of freedom fighters, particularly those whose contributions have received limited recognition in historical accounts.
Vij said the Haryana government had decided to waive entry charges for the first month on the directions of Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini. However, visitors would have to reserve tickets in advance even during the free-entry period.
Bookings can be made through the memorial's official online portal or at the premises, he said. The memorial, named Azadi Ki Pehli Ladai Ka Shaheed Smarak, houses 22 galleries depicting the events, sacrifices and personalities associated with the 1857 uprising.
The complex combines historical records with virtual reality, holography and interactive projections to recreate major episodes of the struggle against British rule.
It also features a 2,500-seat open-air theatre, traditional art installations and a light-and-sound show.
Built at a cost of Rs 594 crore, according to the union Home Ministry, the project is among Haryana's major investments in historical and cultural infrastructure.
Vij said the memorial was intended to correct what he described as the inadequate recognition given to freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives during the uprising.
He reiterated his claim that the armed uprising against British rule began in Ambala Cantonment on May 10, 1857, nine hours before the outbreak in Meerut, a city traditionally associated with the beginning of the revolt.
The minister said the struggle began 28 years before the formation of the Indian National Congress in 1885 and subsequently spread across large parts of the country.
Referring to British reprisals during the uprising, Vij said numerous freedom fighters had been executed and entire villages subjected to severe punishment, while many of those killed remained largely absent from mainstream historical narratives.
At Thursday's inauguration, Shah described the memorial as a "source of patriotic inspiration" for younger generations and urged people to visit the complex to understand the sacrifices made during the independence struggle.
The state government expects the memorial to emerge as a major centre for historical education and heritage tourism, offering visitors an account of the events of 1857 through documentary evidence and modern exhibition technology.
