AP: Girl student severely injured after chainsaw attack in classroom; accused youth arrested; CM speaks with mother

Anantapur, Oct 31 (UNI) In a gruesome incident, a Class 10 girl student was attacked with a 'chainsaw machine' in her classroom in the presence of students and a teacher at Raptadu village of the district on Saturday.
Police said that the 14-year-old victim, Gopika Lakshmi, was studying in Zilla Parishad High School. When she was in her classroom, a youth barged into the classroom and hacked the girl with a chainsaw machine, which is used to cut trees.
She suffered deep injuries on her face and left hand and collapsed in a pool of blood.
Another girl student who went to her rescue was also injured in the incident and was undergoing treatment.
After the brutal attack, the accused, who was later identified as Hemant, fled the scene leaving the chainsaw in the classroom.
The victim Gopika was admitted to the GGH where a team of doctors performed surgery on her face and hand.
Later she was shifted to a corporate hospital in Bangalore as her condition turned very critical.
The police later arrested the accused Hemant at a railway track at Dharmavaram.
Upon learning of the incident, a large number of panic stricken parents of the students rushed to the school.
According to relatives of the victim, the accused had been stalking the girl and harassing her in the name of love for the last few days.
The incident sent shock waves across the state raising questions on the safety of girl students at school.
Meanwhile, the government suspended school headmistress Rajeswari and another teacher for their laxity in ensuring security of girl students.
Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav, MLA P Sunitha visited the girl in the hospital.
Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu expressed deep anguish over the brutal attack. The Chief Minister spoke to officials to enquire about her condition and the treatment being provided.
He directed the medical team to accord her the highest priority and provide the best possible care. Naidu directed police officials to swiftly apprehend the accused and take stringent action under the law to ensure severe punishment.
Later the Chief Minister spoke to the mother of the victim Gopika Lakshmi over phone and offered her words of comfort and reassurance.
He urged her to remain courageous and assured her that the accused would be punished severely. The Chief Minister assured the family that the government would extend complete support and that every possible effort would be made to save the student's life.
Responding to the shocking incident, former Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy said that the barbaric chainsaw attack inside a classroom exposes the total collapse of law and order under the TDP coalition’s regime.
"How could an assailant freely storm into a government school and brutally assault a young girl?," he questioned.
"This shows the government’s utter negligence in ensuring the safety of children, even inside educational institutions. It is unfortunate that another student was also injured while trying to intervene. The injured students must be provided with the best emergency medical treatment immediately, and their families must be taken into confidence," the Ex-CM said.
