Vizhinjam port receives first import container, opens new chapter in Kerala's maritime trade

Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 31 (UNI) The Vizhinjam International Seaport has received its first import container, marking a major step towards expanding its operations beyond transshipment and establishing itself as a direct gateway for Kerala's import trade.
The inaugural import container, which arrived aboard the vessel MSC Sabrina III from Ningbo in China, was flagged off on October 31 by Vizhinjam International Seaport Limited Managing Director Jeromic George.
The consignment was booked by Thiruvananthapuram-based startup BSG Logistics and Ship Chandlers Private Limited on behalf of Altair Group. It contains engineered building boards used in the construction industry as an alternative to conventional plywood.
The commencement of direct import handling will enable traders to bring goods into Kerala through Vizhinjam, complete customs clearance at the port and transport the consignments directly to their respective destinations within the state.
This is expected to reduce dependence on other ports, minimise cargo transit time and transportation costs, and make the movement of imported goods more efficient.
The facility is also expected to help retain revenue from cargo handling and logistics activities within Kerala and generate employment opportunities in customs brokerage, freight forwarding, transportation, warehousing and other port-related services, particularly in Thiruvananthapuram and neighbouring southern districts.
The arrival of the first import container marks an important transition for Vizhinjam from a transshipment-focused facility to a port offering direct import services to businesses and traders in Kerala, strengthening the state's maritime trade and logistics network.
