Arunachal BJP defends SIR, hits out at Congress’s ‘Vote Chori’ campaign

Itanagar, Nov 5 (UNI) The Arunachal Pradesh unit of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday defended the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, asserting that the exercise falls within the constitutional mandate of the Election Commission of India (ECI), while criticising the Congress’s ‘Vote Chori’ campaign.
Addressing a press conference at the party headquarters here, BJP state president Kaling Moyong said opposition parties should focus on strengthening their organisations and engaging with people rather than questioning constitutional institutions and creating unnecessary controversy over the electoral process.
He described the Congress’s ongoing 'Vote Chori' campaign and its recent mock Parliament programme in New Delhi as political activities that, in his view, undermine public confidence in democratic institutions.
Moyong said the BJP’s organisational strength rested on its grassroots workers and their presence at booth and village levels. He added that the party had appointed Booth Level Agents (BLAs) across polling stations to assist Booth Level Officers (BLOs) and facilitate the revision process.
Referring to alleged discrepancies in electoral rolls, including cases where the recorded age difference between a father and son was unusually small, Moyong said such inconsistencies underlined the need for a thorough revision to ensure accurate and reliable voter lists.
He maintained that voters whose names might have been inadvertently omitted during verification could apply for inclusion through Form 6, following the prescribed procedure. On opposition concerns over Forms 6 and 7, he said the ECI had clarified that no substantive changes had been made and that an additional declaration had been incorporated.
Moyong also pointed out that electoral roll revisions had been conducted under previous governments, including Congress-led administrations. He urged people not to be influenced by what he termed politically motivated narratives and called for cooperation with the ECI.
He said the BJP had begun preparations for the 2029 general elections through continued public outreach and organisational strengthening, adding that the party would respect democratic processes and the people's mandate.
BJP state secretary Joram Tat said the party was organising ‘Chintan Samvad’ programmes across all 60 Assembly constituencies to discuss the SIR process and address public concerns. The programme had been completed in 43 constituencies, with the remaining sessions scheduled to be held shortly, he said.
Meanwhile, BJP MLA and party spokesperson Topin Ete, speaking to the media at Aalo, also defended the SIR, expressing confidence in the ECI’s ability to conduct the exercise impartially and transparently.
Ete rejected allegations of misuse of power by the Commission and criticised Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over his remarks on the revision exercise. He said the SIR was intended to safeguard electoral integrity and urged political leaders to respect democratic institutions.
BJP MLA Mutchu Mithi and other party functionaries were also present at the Itanagar press conference.
