Manipur CM for dedicated department for handloom sector

Imphal, Nov 5 (UNI) Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh has announced that the State Government is considering the establishment of an upgraded, full-fledged department exclusively for Handloom, Handicrafts and Textiles, recognising the sector's significant contribution to Manipur's economy, cultural heritage and global identity.
The Chief Minister made the announcement while inaugurating the Manipur International Textile Expo (MANITEX) 2026 at Urban Haat, Nilakuthi, Imphal, under the theme “Weave for Togetherness, Many Threads, One Manipur” today.
Addressing the gathering, Khemchand Singh highlighted the important role of handloom and handicrafts in driving the state's economic growth and promoting Manipur's identity on the global stage. He observed that, alongside art, culture and sports, the state's traditional textile sector has immense potential to enhance its recognition internationally.
Sharing his personal connection with the sector, the Chief Minister recalled that his mother was a weaver and that he had himself delivered yarn to the Kongba area of Imphal East in the past. He said these experiences had given him a firsthand understanding of the hard work, dedication and challenges faced by people engaged in weaving.
He also maintained that it would be incorrect to assume that the handloom sector had not progressed, pointing out that development and growth had continued over the years. However, he stressed the need for further strengthening the sector to create greater opportunities and ensure better benefits for local weavers and artisans.
The Chief Minister directed the concerned government authorities to ensure that the benefits of various Centrally Sponsored Schemes of the Government of India effectively reach the state's artisans and weavers.
It may be noted that Handloom, Handicrafts and Textiles currently functions as a subsidiary of the Trade, Commerce and Industries Department.
During the programme, the Chief Minister also launched the official mobile application of MANITEX 2026 and released the coffee table book titled “Exploring Manipur Textile Design”.
He further distributed awards and benefits relating to crafts and frame looms and accessories, besides extending assistance for the construction of individual worksheds to weavers under the Imphal East Mega Handloom Cluster and the Small Development Programme under the National Handloom Development Programme.
