Bihar teen's organ donation saves three lives; family turns personal tragedy into hope

Patna, Nov 5 (UNI) In an extraordinary act of compassion amid profound grief, the family of 16-year-old Monu Kumar, who was declared brain dead following a road accident, has given three critically ill patients a new lease of life by donating his liver and both kidneys.
Monu, a resident of Patna, had sustained serious injuries in a road accident and was undergoing treatment at the Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS), Patna, where doctors subsequently declared him brain dead. Even as the family struggled to come to terms with the devastating loss, they made the courageous decision to donate his organs, turning an irreparable personal tragedy into a source of hope for others.
Bihar Health Minister Nishant Kumar, referring to the incident which he shared in detail on his social media account, said the family''s decision reflected extraordinary sensitivity, courage and humanity at a time of immense personal sorrow.
The minister said that immediately after the matter came to his notice, he directed the IGIMS director and the head of its liver transplant department to make arrangements for all necessary expenses involved in the organ donation process. He also instructed them to facilitate the state government''s previously announced financial assistance of Rs 15 lakh per liver transplant patient.
The organ donation resulted in three successful transplants, informed the minister saying that a 19-year-old woman underwent a successful liver transplant at IGIMS, while one patient received a kidney at the same institute. Another kidney was transplanted into a patient at AIIMS, Patna.
The minister said the coordinated efforts of the brain death committee at IGIMS, State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (SOTTO), Bihar, National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO), Delhi, Regional Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (ROTTO), Kolkata, and medical teams at IGIMS and AIIMS, Patna, played a crucial role in making the transplants possible.
Congratulating the doctors and medical teams involved in the operation, Nishant Kumar paid tribute to Monu''s family for taking a decision that went beyond personal grief and gave hope to three other families.
"Organ donation is the greatest gift. The organs donated by one person can give several others a second chance at life," the minister said, praying for peace for the departed teenager''s soul.
The minister saud that behind the medical success lies a deeply moving human story: a family that lost its 16-year-old son chose to ensure that his life, in another form, would continue to save others. Monu may no longer be with his loved ones, but his final gift has given three families a reason to hope and three patients an opportunity to live, he added.
