Bengal completes Census Phase 1 fieldwork ahead of deadline: CM

Kolkata, Sep 16 (UNI) Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said West Bengal had completed 100 per cent of the fieldwork for the first phase of the 2026 Census ahead of the September 14 deadline.
"I am immensely pleased to share that West Bengal has achieved 100pc fieldwork completion for Census Phase 1 well within the deadline of September 14, 2026," Adhikari said in a post on X on Wednesday, describing the achievement as a "proud and momentous milestone" for the state.
According to figures shared by the Chief Minister, all 1,73,066 House Listing Blocks (HLBs) across every district, subdivision, block, municipal corporation and municipality in the state have achieved complete coverage.
More than 3.68 crore census houses, or 3,68,30,150, have been enumerated against a projected 3.69 crore, accounting for nearly 99.7 per cent of the expected households.
Adhikari attributed the achievement to the work of grassroots enumerators and supervisors and the administrative machinery.
"Through sheer dedication, meticulous planning and relentless effort, our administrative machinery has covered every corner of the State with remarkable speed and accuracy," he said.
He thanked thousands of enumerators and supervisors who worked across hills, plains and riverine areas and visited households despite different weather conditions.
The Chief Minister also expressed his appreciation for district magistrates, sub-divisional officers, block development officers, municipal commissioners and other officials for their round-the-clock coordination and efforts.
Adhikari also thanked citizens for their cooperation and participation in the exercise, saying their support had helped the authorities complete the work within the stipulated timeframe.
West Bengal had earlier recorded a high level of participation in the self-enumeration phase of the first fully digital Census.
According to state government figures, 53,13,589 families had submitted their information online through the self-enumeration process by August 15.
The first 15 days, from August 1-15, were earmarked for online self-enumeration, after which house-to-house population enumeration was conducted from August 16 to September 14.
The second phase of the Census is scheduled to begin in February 2027, barring certain exceptions. UNI SAG SAS
