CM Majhi urges citizens to make Bhubaneswar India’s cleanest city

Bhubaneswar, Oct 1 (UNI) Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Thursday called upon citizens to join hands in making Bhubaneswar the cleanest and most beautiful city in the country, saying collective responsibility was the key to achieving the goal.
Participating in the ‘Ek Din, Ek Ghanta, Ek Saath’ cleanliness programme organised by the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation at Khandagiri, Majhi said Bhubaneswar currently ranks ninth in the country’s cleanliness rankings and urged citizens to work together to take it to the top position.
“This city belongs to us and the responsibility for keeping it clean also rests with all of us,” the Chief Minister said, adding that if every citizen properly discharged their individual responsibility, Bhubaneswar could emerge as the cleanest and most beautiful city in the country.
Urging citizens to become more conscious about cleanliness, Majhi said people generally keep their homes and premises clean but needed to broaden their outlook to include the roads, streets and neighbourhoods around them.
He called upon people to join hands with sanitation workers, segregate wet and dry waste at source and regularly hand it over to garbage collection vehicles. He also appealed to citizens not to litter roads and to discourage others from doing so.
The Chief Minister said Mahatma Gandhi had accorded the highest importance to cleanliness even before Independence. Since 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had carried forward Gandhi’s vision and transformed it into a broad-based people’s movement through the ‘Swachhata Hi Seva’ campaign, he said.
Majhi described the ‘Ek Din, Ek Ghanta, Ek Saath’ programme under the Swachhata Hi Seva campaign as an innovative and commendable initiative aimed at involving society at large in the cleanliness drive.
Noting that Bhubaneswar had become cleaner and more beautiful, the Chief Minister credited the city’s sanitation workers, popularly known as ‘Safai Mitras’, for the achievement and thanked them for their uninterrupted service.
He said the state government was committed to ensuring social security and providing housing facilities for the Safai Mitras.
Majhi also congratulated the authorities and officials of the two municipal corporations, particularly the Safai Mitras, after Bhubaneswar and Puri, the two major cities of Odisha, were selected for development among the country’s 50 ‘Model Sanitation Cities’.
