CMFRI supplies 5 lakh green mussel seeds to Maharashtra fishers

Kochi, Oct 25 (UNI) The ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) has supplied another five lakh hatchery-produced green mussel seeds to fisherfolk and tribal communities in Maharashtra, taking the total supply to 10 lakh within six months.
The initiative aims to translate marine fisheries research into livelihood opportunities by promoting sustainable bivalve farming along the Maharashtra coast, CMFRI Director Dr Grinson George said.
The green mussel seeds, measuring 2–4 millimetres, were produced at CMFRI’s bivalve hatchery at its Vizhinjam Regional Centre in Thiruvananthapuram under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY).
In addition, one lakh oyster seeds produced at CMFRI’s Madras Regional Station were supplied to Maharashtra to promote oyster farming in the state.
The initiative is expected to diversify livelihood opportunities for fisherfolk and tribal communities while encouraging science-based coastal aquaculture practices.
As part of the project, a CMFRI scientific team led by Principal Scientist Dr M.K. Anil trained 30 officials from Maharashtra’s Mangrove Cell in nursery rearing and farming techniques for mussels and oysters. The trained officials are expected to facilitate the transfer of technical knowledge and farming practices to local communities, he said.
The Mangrove and Marine Biodiversity Conservation Foundation in Maharashtra is coordinating the participation of farmers and linking seed supply and technical assistance with farming activities. The project is supported by the union Department of Fisheries.
Dr Grinson George said bivalve farming was a low-investment activity with low operational costs and considerable potential to strengthen coastal livelihoods while supporting ecosystem health.
Once established in suitable locations, mussels and oysters require minimal external inputs, provided water quality and environmental conditions remain favourable. Appropriate site selection, monitoring and harvesting practices are essential to ensure sustainable production, he said.
Integrating bivalve farming with mangrove restoration could also contribute to ecosystem conservation. As filter-feeding organisms, mussels and oysters help improve water quality, making bivalve farming a nature-based approach that combines livelihood generation, sustainable aquaculture and coastal ecosystem management, he added.
