Cong high command steps in to defuse Karnataka unit's internal strains

Bengaluru, Sept 16 (UNI) The Congress high command on Wednesday stepped in to contain growing strains within its Karnataka unit, with AICC general secretary KC Venugopal and Karnataka in-charge Randeep Singh Surjewala holding a series of meetings with Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, KPCC president BK Hariprasad, former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and other senior leaders.
The intervention assumes significance amid signs of friction within the State leadership and comes as the high command seeks greater coordination among senior leaders ahead of the 2028 Assembly elections.
Venugopal and Surjewala began the day by meeting newly appointed district Congress presidents at the KPCC office and later held discussions with senior leaders.
The high command's intervention comes at a time when the State unit is dealing with several organisational issues, including pending appointments and vacant ministerial berths, while differences among senior leaders have increasingly become a subject of political discussion.
Shivakumar, however, sought to play down the significance of the meetings, saying the AICC leaders had come to guide the newly appointed district presidents.
"Our new presidents have all been appointed. They have to be given guidance, and that is why the meeting has been convened," he said.
The meetings assume significance as Siddaramaiah continues to remain an influential voice within the party, while differences between Shivakumar and Hariprasad have also attracted attention within the State unit.
The Congress leadership has maintained that the government and organisation remain united and that the party is focused on strengthening its organisation ahead of the next Assembly elections.
Meanwhile, the BJP has stepped up its attack on the Congress, with State president B.Y. Vijayendra portraying the ruling party as divided into separate camps and targeting the relationship between Shivakumar and Hariprasad.
Vijayendra alleged that Siddaramaiah, Hariprasad and Shivakumar were moving in different directions and claimed that the Chief Minister was increasingly isolated within his own party.
The BJP's attack comes amid a broader political offensive against the Congress government, while the ruling party is also dealing with contentious issues, including the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.
With the high command now directly engaging with the State leadership, the meetings underline the Congress' efforts to keep internal differences from overshadowing organisational preparations and the functioning of the government.
