Congress protests against CEC, SIR in North Bengal

Siliguri, Sep 28 (UNI) Congress workers staged demonstrations in Siliguri and Malda on Monday against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and over what the party alleged was the partisan functioning of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
In Siliguri, the Darjeeling district Congress organised a protest march from the foot of the statue of Dr B R Ambedkar near Siliguri Junction to the office of the Sub-Divisional Officer. Party workers raised slogans against the Election Commission and demanded the arrest of the CEC, alleging irregularities in the voter-list revision process. The demonstration was part of the nationwide programme called by the All India Congress Committee.
In Malda, a similar protest march and street-corner meeting were organised by the Malda district Congress under the leadership of South Malda MP and district Congress president Isha Khan Chowdhury. “We are protesting to protect the democratic rights of citizens and demanding that the concerns surrounding the SIR and the functioning of the Election Commission be addressed transparently,” she said.
The Congress has alleged that the SIR exercise could result in the exclusion of genuine voters and has questioned decisions taken under Kumar’s tenure. The party has also demanded an independent review of electoral-roll changes and the reversal of decisions it considers undemocratic.
