Congress States to Draw Up Education Reform Plans Within a Month: KC Venugopal

New Delhi, Sep 29 (UNI) Congress-ruled states will prepare a comprehensive action plans for reforms in the education sector within a month after holding state-level consultations with education experts and other stakeholders, Congress general secretary K C Venugopal said on Tuesday, as the party moved to develop a coordinated response to what it described as the RSS's attempt to push a "divisive agenda" through the education system.
The decision was taken at a meeting convened by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi with chief ministers and education ministers of Congress-ruled states. Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, along with the party's general secretaries and state in-charges, also participated in the deliberations.
In a post on X, Venugopal said the meeting discussed "how to push back against the RSS' efforts to drive their divisive agenda through the education sector" and ways in which Congress-ruled states could emerge as "model states" in education.
Under the proposed exercise, state-level seminars will be organised with the participation and guidance of reputed education experts and other stakeholders. The chief ministers will then prepare detailed action plans within a month, incorporating recommendations emerging from the consultations, Venugopal said.
A national-level seminar involving experts will subsequently be held to devise a mechanism for implementing and coordinating the proposed plans across Congress-ruled states.
Venugopal said the chief ministers would also make presentations on what the Congress sees as the RSS's growing influence over the education system. The party has alleged that the organisation's "poisonous agenda is polluting our young minds" and claimed that "RSS-backed Vice Chancellors are being appointed" to advance such an agenda.
The initiative comes amid a continuing political contest between the Congress and the BJP-led union Government over the direction of education policy, curriculum changes and appointments to higher educational institutions. The Congress has repeatedly accused the BJP and the RSS of seeking to reshape educational institutions along ideological lines, allegations that the BJP and its ideological affiliates have rejected while defending changes in education as part of broader reforms.
The Congress exercise is intended to provide its state governments with a coordinated framework for education reforms while also developing a common policy response to issues confronting school and higher education.
Venugopal said the process would combine consultations with education experts and stakeholders with concrete state-level measures, followed by a national mechanism to coordinate and implement the proposed reforms across Congress-ruled states.
