YouTube ecosystem contributed over Rs 18,000 crore to India’s GDP in 2025: Murugan

New Delhi, 29 Sep (UNI) union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting L Murugan on Tuesday highlighted the growing contribution of India’s creator economy to economic growth, employment and cultural outreach, urging young creators to use artificial intelligence responsibly.
Addressing the YouTube Impact Summit 2026 here, he said, “The future should not be: AI versus creators. It should be: AI empowering creators.” He called upon young creators to “Create with courage, responsibility and with purpose,” stressing that while “Technology changes rapidly. Constitutional values endure.”
According to the YouTube Impact Report unveiled at the summit, the platform’s creative ecosystem contributed over Rs 18,000 crore to India’s GDP in 2025 and supported more than 9.6 lakh full-time-equivalent jobs. Highlighting India’s growing global digital presence, Murugan said content produced in the country receives over 15 per cent of its watch time from audiences abroad, while more than 18,000 Indian YouTube channels have crossed one million subscribers.
The Minister emphasised the need to transform India from a digital consumer market into a hub of creators and innovators, noting that digital technology has enabled talent from every district, language and community to reach global audiences. Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of “Create in India, create for the World”, he said the Orange Economy, built around content, creativity and culture, could generate employment, businesses, intellectual property, exports and cultural influence.
Murugan said AI could assist creators in writing, translation, editing, animation, composition, design and distribution, while human imagination would remain central to creativity. The summit, themed “Co-Creating Impact: India’s Digital Leadership and the Orange Economy”, also featured the unveiling of “Create with AI” films developed in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Creative Technologies.
