MCD steps up enforcement against illegal construction, carries out 33 demolitions

New Delhi, Sept 29 (UNI) The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) continued its enforcement against dangerous buildings and illegal constructions across the city, days after a building collapse in Delhi’s Satya Niketan that claimed the lives of seven, including five students.
On Tuesday, the civic body carried out 33 demolition actions across its 12 zones, sealed 12 properties and issued three demolition orders for violations of building norms, the MCD said.
The action covered areas including Paschim Puri, Madipur, Janakpuri, Yamuna Vihar, Bhagirathi Vihar, Shahdara, Shakurpur, Mayur Vihar Phase-I, Shastri Nagar, Krishna Nagar, New Rajinder Nagar, Prem Nagar, Karampura and Sangam Vihar, officials said.
The action comes against the backdrop of the Satya Niketan building collapse, which has renewed scrutiny of structural safety, unauthorised construction and enforcement of building regulations in the capital. The incident has also triggered demands for stronger checks on buildings that may pose a risk to residents and occupants.
The MCD had carried out another enforcement drive a day earlier, demolishing 29 properties and sealing 10 for violations of the Master Plan of Delhi (MPD) and building bye-laws.
Officials said the latest action was aimed at checking unauthorised construction, violations of building norms, and structures considered dangerous. The civic body has directed its field officials to maintain vigilance across the 12 zones and take action against violations under applicable provisions. UNI MBJ CDS
