R Sreelekha withdraws resignation move as Thiruvananthapuram Corporation councillor

Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 4 (UNI) Former Kerala DGP and BJP leader R Sreelekha has withdrawn her resignation move as Thiruvananthapuram Corporation councillor following intervention by the party leadership, ending the immediate uncertainty over her continuation in the civic body.
Sreelekha, who represents the Sasthamangalam ward, deleted the message she had posted in a WhatsApp group informing residents about her decision to resign. The move came after senior BJP leaders held discussions with her as part of efforts to persuade her to reconsider the decision.
Mayor V V Rajesh also confirmed that Sreelekha would continue as councillor. He said she had certain difficulties in carrying out development activities in her division and was also facing health-related concerns, and that the issues had been discussed with her.
BJP state general secretary S Suresh, who visited Sreelekha at the hospital, said she had been unwell and had expressed concern over her ability to discharge her responsibilities as an elected representative. He maintained that she had brought the matter to the attention of the concerned people and that it subsequently became a subject of public discussion.
Sreelekha had submitted her resignation letter to Mayor V V Rajesh on September 30 and announced the decision through a WhatsApp group of people in her ward on Saturday. The Mayor had said earlier that he had received the letter but had not forwarded it to the Corporation Secretary, who is the competent authority to process the resignation.
The resignation move had come amid reports of differences between Sreelekha and the party leadership. She had reportedly been dissatisfied over not being considered for the Mayor's post and over other organisational issues. However, BJP leaders have maintained that her decision was linked to personal difficulties and health concerns rather than any dispute with the party.
Senior BJP leaders, including state president Rajeev Chandrasekhar, held discussions with Sreelekha following her resignation announcement. Party sources said efforts to address her concerns had helped persuade her to withdraw the move.
The development is significant for the BJP-led administration in the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation, which has been functioning with a narrow majority in the 101-member council. Sreelekha's resignation would have further affected the ruling side's numerical strength.
Sreelekha, a former Director General of Police and the state's first woman IPS officer, had entered electoral politics with the BJP and was elected from Sasthamangalam to the Corporation.
