Cyclone Arnab: Odisha Dy CM reviews Energy department’s disaster preparedness

Bhubaneswar, Oct 26 (UNI) With Cyclone Arnab posing a potential threat to southern and coastal Odisha, Deputy Chief Minister K V Singh Deo on Monday reviewed the Energy Department’s disaster preparedness and operational readiness, directing officials to ensure grid resilience, minimise power disruptions and prevent loss of life.
The review meeting, chaired by Singh Deo, focused on the critical preparedness period from October 26 to 29, with particular emphasis on vulnerable areas across southern and coastal Odisha. The Deputy Chief Minister issued a series of directives to strengthen emergency response mechanisms and ensure the timely restoration of electricity supply following the cyclone.
As part of the government’s efforts to ensure effective coordination and real-time monitoring, Singh Deo will be stationed in Koraput to oversee the cyclone’s impact and lead emergency response operations across the southern region.
To ensure effective management of power infrastructure and facilitate swift restoration, the Odisha Power Transmission Corporation Limited (OPTCL) has established a multi-tier strategic command network.
The arrangements include a dedicated 24x7 central control room at the State Transmission Asset Management Centre (STAMC) in Chandaka, zonal-level monitoring at Narendrapur and 11 strategic field control centres covering vulnerable locations.
The field control centres are located at Narendrapur, Chatrapur, Bhanjanagar, Jayanagar, Malkangiri, Theruvali, Kesinga, Samangara, Paradeep, Bhadrak and Baleshwar.
According to officials, all control units are fully operational and equipped with dedicated vigilance rosters, functional communication links, backup diesel generators and DC power systems to ensure uninterrupted coordination during the emergency.
Singh Deo said the Energy Department was committed to ensuring the immediate and timely restoration of power infrastructure as soon as weather conditions permitted.
He stressed that restoration efforts would give priority to essential services and critical public infrastructure, including hospitals, schools and cyclone shelters, to safeguard public health and safety during the emergency.
The department is focusing on strengthening preparedness, maintaining operational readiness and ensuring a coordinated response to minimise the impact of the impending cyclone on electricity supply and essential services.
The meeting was attended by Energy Secretary Vishal Kumar Dev, along with senior officials from OPTCL, Tata Power and the Energy Department.
